Wyoming Highway Patrol - Overview

The Wyoming Highway Patrol was created in 1933.  According to Wyoming State Statute, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, within the Wyoming Department of Transportation, was established to consist of personnel to be appointed and designated as to rank by the administrator of the Highway Patrol. The Director shall appoint an administrator of the Highway Patrol who shall hold the rank of colonel.

The State Highway Patrol, acting under the direction of the Director, shall enforce all the motor vehicle laws of the State of Wyoming. They shall also perform other duties assigned to them by the governor and are at all times subject to the call of the governor for emergency purposes at their discretion.  The administrator of the State Highway Patrol shall provide State Troopers for law enforcement services and for protection of personnel in the capitol building, governor's residence, other state buildings as directed.

All sworn members of the State Highway Patrol shall have and exercise all the powers vested in peace officers, except the power to serve civil writs and processes.

Our agency is composed of multiple sections, each with their own unique responsibilities, and each vital to fulfilling our mission.  Among these sections are sworn law enforcement (State Troopers) and civilian personnel including dispatchers, evidence specialists, Port of Entry officers, records professionals, and administrative personnel.  Through teamwork, dedication, and professionalism all members of the Wyoming Highway Patrol work in concert to serve and protect the people of Wyoming.

Now Hiring State Troopers

Class 106 of the Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Academy is scheduled to begin in early January, 2024.  Applications for Class 107, which will commence in the summer of 2024, are now open.

Wyoming State Troopers are fully-sworn law enforcement officers with statewide jurisdiction to enforce the laws of the great state of Wyoming.  Wyoming is the 10th largest yet least populous state in the country. With roughly 33,000 miles of public roadways, including over 900 miles of interstate highways, our Troopers are a highly trained and highly capable team responsible for promoting and protecting public safety throughout our state.  Whether it’s the nearly 14,000 foot Gannett Peak or the Belle Fourche River at just over 3,000 feet, the rolling prairies in the southeast or the rugged mountains of the northwest, the winding rivers, the high desert, the quiet western towns, or the vibrant cities  - Wyoming has something for everyone and there’s plenty to go around.

Whether you’ve always dreamed of becoming a Wyoming State Trooper or you’re just exploring your options; if you are looking for an impactful, meaningful, and invigorating career you’re sure to find it as a State Trooper for the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
